Wanda Trainer Kunce, 91, of Murphysboro, died Sunday,
September 18, 2011 in Murphysboro. Wanda retired in 1988 from
Tri-County School in Murphysboro where she was a special education
teacher. She began her teaching career in local country schools. Wanda
was also a homemaker and for many years was the full time caregiver for
her beloved husband and son.
Wanda was born May 1, 1920 in Wolf Lake, IL., a daughter to the late
George S. and Mina (Hawkins) Trainer. In December 1940, Wanda married
Judge Peyton H. Kunce. At that time is was not proper for a school
teacher to be married. Wanda and Peyton at first kept their marriage a
secret so she could continue to work. Judge Kunce preceded her in death
in 2004. They were married for 63 years. Wanda was also preceded in
death by her son, C.P. Kunce, seven brothers and sisters and one nephew;
Fred Choate of Cobden.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law; Stephen and Donna Kunce
of Murphysboro, grandsons; Dr. Scott Kunce of Miami Beach, FL., and Zach
and Brandy Swift of Murphysboro, sister; Jewel Choate of Murphysboro,
nephews; Patrick Myers of Anna, and Curtis Trainer of Jasper, IN.,
nieces; Marilyn Willis of Oraville, IL., and Sharon Rivenbark of
Unionville, IN.
Wanda received her bachelor in education from SIUC. She was a member of
the First Presbyterian Church of Murphysboro, Egyptian Association for
Mentally Retarded Citizens and the Jackson County Community Workshop (S.T.A.R.T.)
where her son, C.P., was employed. She served on the Board of Special
Olympics in Southern Illinois and was a strong advocate of those with
special needs.
Funeral Services will be at 11am on Thursday, September 22, 2011 at the
First Presbyterian Church in Murphysboro; Rev. Charles Walden of the
First Presbyterian Church will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to
8pm on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at Crawshaw Funeral Home in
Murphysboro and from 9 to 11 am Thursday at the First Presbyterian
Church. Memorials are encouraged and may be made to the First
Presbyterian Church and will be accepted at the funeral home and church.
