Richard E. Thorpe, 97 of Carbondale died at 2:15pm on Saturday, October, 24, 2009 in Carbondale. Richard was born February 14, 1912 a son to the late Johnny and Essie (Anderson) Wade. He married Zeola Atkins on June 27, 1934 in Chicago, Zeola preceded him in death. Richard was an Army Air Corp veteran from WWII; he was a 1947 Graduate of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale majoring in Education. Richard was a school teacher having taught Art in the Ullin, IL. School system and in Murphysboro School Dist. 186, he retired in 1974. He had also taught at Lane College in Jackson, TN during summers. He was a former member of the Murphysboro Rotary Club, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, and Southern Illinois Earth Science Club in Benton, IL. he was a member of the Illinois Education Association, Jackson County Retired Teachers Association, the National Education Association, the American Legion Post in Carbondale, and the Southern Illinois University Alumni Association. Cremation services have been accorded; a graveside memorial service will be held at Pleasant Grove Memorial Park near Murphysboro on Friday, November 6, 2009 at 11 am, Pastor Edgar Lewis will officiate, graveside military rites will also be conducted by the American Legion Paul Stout Post 127 and the V.F.W. Post 7190 both of Murphysboro, V.F.W. Post 2605 of Carbondale and the Jackson County Disabled American Veterans Chapter 69. Survivors include two grandsons; Darnell Reese Futrell Jr. of Carbondale and David Futrell of Detroit, MI., one granddaughter and her husband; Kimberly and Bruce Johnson of Detroit, MI., one brother; George Wade of Mounds City, IL., one half brother; Wesley Wade of Glen Burnie, Maryland two great grandchildren; Benjimen and Katelynn Johnson, great niece; Shelly Harris of Murphysboro and many other nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to his parents and wife he was also preceded in death by one son; Darnell C. Thorpe Futrell, four half sisters; Aquilla Wade Jones, Anna Goodiel, Helen Taylor, and Beatrice Terry, and one half brother; Jay Wade.
