Roy N. Summers, 91 of Murphysboro,
died at 7:15 pm Monday, February 26, 2007 at the Veterans Affairs Medical
Center in Marion, IL. Roy was born in Jackson County, March 6, 1915 a son
of the late Albert and Mary (Green) Summers. He married Dorothy Lucille
Rushing March 14, 1943 in Cape Girardeau, MO. Dorothy survives of
Murphysboro. Funeral services will be at 11am Friday, March 2, 2007 at
Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro, Rev. Richard Kinnamon of the First
Baptist Church will officiate, burial with military rites by the American
Legion Paul Stout Post 127, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7190 both of
Murphysboro, VFW Post 2605 in Carbondale and Jackson County Disabled
American Veterans Chapter 69 will follow at Pleasant Grove Memorial Park
near Murphysboro. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 pm Thursday at the
funeral home. Roy was a member of the First Baptist Church in Murphysboro,
he was a past Sunday School Superintendent for 14 years, had also served
as a Sunday School Teacher, and a member of the Board of Deacons for
several terms, and was past board member of and chairman of the board of
the Hudleson Children's Home in Centralia, IL. Roy was a retired sales
representative for the Vernon Company for 44 years, and had also worked
for the R.E.A. Electric Coop for 8 years early in his work career. Roy was
a Yeoman in the U.S. Navy during WWII serving aboard the U.S.S.
Dorchester. On February 3, 1943, a German submarine torpedoed his ship
approximately 80 to 90 miles off the coast of Greenland in the northern
Atlantic; the U.S.S. Dorchester sank in 11 minutes with 678 servicemen and
four Chaplin's aboard, only 233 survived. Roy was in the icy waters of the
northern Atlantic for over 7 hours before his rescue. Roy was awarded the
Purple Heart on January 29, 1944 in New York City for bravery in action.
Roy was a member of the American Legion Paul Stout Post 127, the Veterans
of Foreign Wars Post 7190 both in Murphysboro, the Jackson County Disabled
Veterans Chapter 69 serving as Chaplin of the Jackson County Disabled
Veterans Chapter 69, he also served for many years as Chaplin for military
graveside rites conducted by all four organizations in the Jackson County
area. He was also a Charter Member of and Past President of the
Murphysboro Kiwanis Club. In addition to his wife Dorothy of over 63
years, survivors include; one sister, Vieanna Hunter of Murphysboro, one
brother and sister in law, Earl and Gerry Summers of Murphysboro, and
several nieces and nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by
his parents, 2 brothers; Bill & John Summers, and one sister; Marie
Pleasant. Memorials are encouraged and may be made to the Hudleson
Children's home or to the First Baptist Church in Murphysboro. |
