Lelan E. Stallings MD, 82 of Murphysboro died at 8:20 pm on Thursday, April 7,
2011 at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro. Lelan was born in July 23, 1928 in Granite City, IL, a son to the late Clifford and Ruth (Bayer) Stallings. He was united in marriage to Julia Wickham Porter on August 18, 1983.
Lelan completed Premed at the University of Colorado. He earned his MD from the College of Medicine, University of Illinois,Chicago, IL in 1955, completing his Ophthalmology residence at Indiana University School of Medicine in 1967.
From 1956-1964, Lelan was in general practice, and practiced ophthalmic medicine in Carbondale, IL from 1967- to December, 2010.
At the age of 65, Lelan took up running with his wife, participating in the River to River Relay for several years and finishing two marathons. He was also an avid gardener and fisherman.
Lelan served with the army in occupied Japan from 1946-1948. He was a member of the Jackson County Medical Society, IL State Medical Society, and AMA, as well as a Fellow of the Academy of Ophthalmology, a provider for the National Eye Care Project, and a Member of River to River Runners.
Lelan is survived by his loving wife, Julia; his three sons, Lee Stallings and his wife Joell, and daughter Chelsea of Bedford, TX; Clifford Stallings and his wife Belinda and their three sons, Casey, Alex and Donovan, of Gilbert, AZ; and John Stallings and his wife, Jennifer of Wilmington, NC; his stepchildren, Roy Flannagan and his wife Beckie and their son, Wickham of Florence SC, and Julia Shaw and her husband Scott of Iowa City, IA.
He is also survived by his brother Robert Stallings of Seattle, WA, and numerous nieces and nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews in Utah and Illinois.
Dr. Stallings was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and sisters, and his first wife, Noel Stallings.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm on Monday, April 11, 2011 at Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro, IL. The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made to St Francis Care Animal Shelter at 6228 Country Club Road in Murphysboro, IL.
