C.A. “Aubrey” Payne, age 99 of Murphysboro, died Saturday, April 10, 2010 in Murphysboro.
He was born the third of four children to John and Delia Adams Payne on June 27, 1910 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Mr. Payne was united in marriage to Thelma Bellm on September 2, 1939 in St. Louis, Missouri. She preceded him in death on September 7, 1998.
Mr. Payne worked in law enforcement in several capacities and spent the last forty years of his career working as a detective for the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad. Mr. Payne retired from the Illinois Central Railroad in 1975.
He was a longtime member of the Illinois Police Association and a member of the First Christian Church of Murphysboro.
Mr. Payne was a man of integrity, loyalty and faith. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and was rewarded for this with a long life of health, love and happiness.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles A. “Buddy” Payne , Jr. and wife, Helen of Murphysboro and Richard D. Payne and wife, Jane of Champaign, Illinois; one grandson, Bruce D. Payne and wife, Sandy of Carbondale; one granddaughter, Malea Payne Heller and husband, Jack of Glendale, Missouri; and seven great grandchildren, David, Daniel and Joshua Payne and Jack, Lucy, Molly and Libby Heller.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma, his parents, two brothers, one sister and one daughter-in-law, Donna.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at 11:00 am at Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro with Rev. Dee Armes officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Pleasant Grove Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Murphysboro or Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County.
