Harold O. Maerker, 71 of Murphysboro, died at 9:59am on Wednesday, August 18, 2010 in Carbondale. Harold was born in Carbondale on August 19, 1938 a son to the late Rev. Oscar O. and Pauline Elizabeth (Hogenmiller) Maerker. Harold was united in marriage to Virginia Belt on October 11, 1996 in Murphysboro, Virginia survives of Murphysboro. He was a Protestant by faith and was a United States Air Force Veteran; he was a member of American Legion Paul Stout Post 127 of Murphysboro and was a former member of I.B.E.W. #702. He was a retired Senior Electronics Technician at Southern Illinois University of Carbondale with over 30 years service. Harold was a volunteer firefighter for the Murphysboro Fire Department for over 50 years. He was also active with Murphysboro Emergency Services and Disaster Agency. Graveside services will be Monday, August 23, 2010 at 11am at Pleasant Grove Memorial Park near Murphysboro, with military rites by American Legion Paul Stout Post 127 and V.F.W. Post 7190 both of Murphysboro; V.F.W. Post 2605 in Carbondale and the Jackson County Disabled American Veterans Chapter 69, Murphysboro Fire Department honor guard will also be in attendance. Those wishing to attend services are asked to proceed directly to the cemetery. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers memorials are encouraged and may be made to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation or to the donor's choice and will be accepted at the cemetery or Crawshaw Funeral Home. Survivors include his wife Virginia of Murphysboro, one sister; Ruth Ann Maerker of Murphysboro, one step-daughter; Cindy Scott Jones of St. Louis, MO., two step-sons and one step-daughter-in-law; Mark A. and Pam Scott of Murphysboro and Douglas K. Scott of Eugene OR. , and one step-grandson; Preston Scott of Murphysboro.
