- Jewell, the second child of Anna and Otto Taitt,

friend, Odell V. Loyd, on June 26, 1940. The couple had three
children.

9, 2007 at Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro and from 9:00 am until

- Jewell lived a full life with many interests and
activities. She enjoyed a reputation as a great cook and liked to feed
everyone. Jewell was full of love, believing her most important tasks
were those of helping her husband and raising her children. She dearly
loved and was always there to help her parents and siblings while
welcoming each new niece and nephew with joy. Her love extended to
Odell's immediate and extended family, her children's spouses, and her
many, many friends. Jewell always cherished her time with her two
"chosen sisters"; Allene Loyd and Wanda Raley. After her children were
grown, Jewell found time to pursue many new interests including
painting, doll making, and grandchild spoiling.
- Her enduring relationship with God provided her
with strength and peace. Jewell was a member of the First Baptist
Church in DeSoto for over 50 years. She served as a Sunday school and
Bible school teacher, a girl's Auxiliary and Sunbeams leader, a W.M.U.
officer/member, and gladly assisted in all of her church's endeavors.
- Jewell worked for 22 years as a cook at the DeSoto
Grade School, taking great pride in the meals and treats that she
prepared for the students, faculty, and staff. She was "Aunt Jewell"
to the students and each student was "special" in her eyes.
- She volunteered through the years as a Parent
Teacher Association officer and member, a room mother, a member and
officer of the Jackson County Nursing Home Auxiliary, a server for
Meals on Wheels, and a willing assistant for many charities.
- Jewell leaves two daughters and one son-in-law;
Barbara Humphrey of Royalton and Paulette and John Johnson of DeSoto,
one son and daughter-in-law; John and Pam Loyd of Murphysboro, eight
grandchildren and ten great grandchildren; Kent, Marcie, Zachary, Ian,
and Sierra Buckles of DeSoto, Randy, Julie, Hannah, and Dalton
Humphrey of Royalton, Jon, Andrea, Alexandria and Mattea Humphrey of

sister, Margaret Edwards of Edgewood, KY, brother and sisters-in-law,
Charles and Verna Mae Taitt and Rosemary Taitt all of Hurst, many
adored nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and her hosts, Jo
and Dennis Perry, who provided her with gentle care during the last
four years of her life.
- She was preceded in death by her parents, her
beloved husband of 54 years; Odell, her son-in-law Guy Humphrey, her
brothers; Paul and James Taitt, and her sister and brother-in-law;
Edna and Charles Spiller.
- In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the
First Baptist Church of DeSoto, the DeSoto Grade School Kitchen Fund,
or Hospice of Southern Illinois.

- What Mom Took
- Most often when we think of Mom, we
think of what she's given
- The softness of a loving touch, a
gentle guide for living
- A nightly tip-toe in a room, an
understanding look;
- But sometimes when I think of Mom, I
think of what she took.
- She took a child and taught it how to
live this life with pride.
- She took those kindergarten tears,
and kept them all inside.
- She took the hands that longed to
hold her child and not let go
- And used them to push her child along
the way-to thrive and to grow
- Took time to do so other things like
sew and clean and cook
- And never thought to ask for thanks
for all the things she took
- Thanks Mom!
