Lonnie Nelson, 72 of DeSoto, died at 8am Wednesday, June 10, 2009 in DeSoto. Mr. Nelson was born December 16, 1936 in Grimsby, Illinois the son of John and Rose (Johnson) Nelson. He served in the U.S. Air Force for over twenty years and was a Vietnam Veteran. Mr. Nelson retired in 1974 with the rank of Master Sergeant He was united in marriage to Jeanine Ann Cavaness in Murphysboro on June 8, 1956. She preceded him in death on October 21, 2005. Mr. Nelson was employed by the West Bus Service and drove a bus for Murphysboro District 186 from September 1993 until January 16, 2009. He will be greatly missed by all. Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Pam Nelson of Carterville and Marcie and Kent Buckles of DeSoto; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Tammy Nelson of Herrin and Lonnie, Jr. and Gracie Nelson of Burleson, Texas; eleven grandchildren, Chris, Nathan and wife, Lacy and Kristen Lipe, Ashley and husband, Nathan Atwood, Jerrod Nelson, Zachary, Ian and Sierra Buckles and Taylor, Brooke and Brett Nelson; three great grandchildren, Madyson Lipe, Jayson Lipe and Zoey Lipe; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Rhonda and David Roseberry of Pomona, Sharon Kimsey of Gorham, and Renee and Lloyd Kranawetter of Jacob; three brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Cora Nelson of Ft. Meyers, Florida, Larry and Debbie Nelson of Shelbyville, Kentucky and Ronald and Yong Ae Nelson of Las Vegas, Nevada and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Nelson was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanine; his parents; one brother, Gary and one granddaughter, Kelley Nelson. Funeral services will be Monday, June 15, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro with Rev. Wes Henson officiating. Burial will be in Walker Hill Cemetery in Grand Tower with military rites provided by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard from Scott Air Force Base. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois.
