William J. "Bill" Hellmer, 66 of Murphysboro, died at 8:28pm, on Monday, December 21, 2009 in Carbondale, Illinois. William was born October 20, 1943 near Jacob, IL., a son to the late John Arthur and Josephine Mary (Korando) Hellmer. He married Brenda Louise Heins on May 28, 1966 at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Raddle, Brenda survives of Murphysboro. Bill was a retired physical education teacher in the Murphysboro Unit School District #186. Mr. Hellmer began his career in March 1966 and retired in June 1995. He coached Jr. High basketball in the fall for 16 years and High School baseball in the spring for 7 years. He held a Masters Degree in education from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. He was a member of the Murphysboro Education Association, the Illinois Education Association and National Education Association. Bill was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and Murphysboro Elks Lodge both of Murphysboro. Funeral Mass will be Monday, December 28, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Murphysboro; Father Gary Gummersheimer will officiate. Burial will follow at Glenn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, December 27, 2009 at Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Andrew Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife; Brenda of Murphysboro, two daughter's and one son-in-law; Valerie and Momcilo Mihailovic of Phoenix, AZ., and Tricia Hellmer of Kansas City, MO., one son and daughter-in-law; Scott and Camille Hellmer of Evansville, IN., six grandchildren; Ashley, Jaclyn and Madison Mihailovic and Eli, Meredith and Rachel Hellmer, one sister; Betty Heins of Murphysboro and one brother and sister-in-law; Robert and Mary Hellmer of Waterloo, IL. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother; John Hellmer.
