Genevieve Louise Hawthorne, 89, of Murphysboro, IL
died Monday, November 27, 2006 at the Iowa Masonic Healthcare Facilities,
Bettendorf, Iowa. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 2 ,
2006 at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Murphysboro, with her
nephew, Rev. Steve Pate, officiating. Visitation will be 9-11 a.m. at the
church preceding the funeral. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial
Park near Murphysboro. Memorials are preferred and may be made to her
church. Genevieve Thornton was born March 2, 1917 in Pinckneyville, IL to
the late Offa and Beulah (Campbell) Thornton. She married Bill Hawthorne
on Sept. 9, 1938 in Murphysboro. He preceded her in death March 31, 1991.
Genevieve was a devoted homemaker who dearly loved her family. She had
worked in years past in retail and in the family grocery business, Bill
and Gene's Supermarket. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church
where she had been an officer of the Women's Association. She enjoyed
playing bridge and belonged to several bridge clubs. In previous years,
she had been involved with PTA, Cub Scouts, Eastern Star, White Shrine,
Jackson County Home Extension, St. Joseph Memorial Hospital Auxiliary,
Jackson County Nursing Home Auxiliary, Royal Neighbors and the Murphysboro
Senior Citizens. Those left to honor her memory include a son and
daughter-in-law, Bill and Judy Hawthorne, Davenport, IA; daughter-in-law,
Sue Hawthorne, Murphysboro, IL; six grandchildren, Monica (Mike) Haake,
Michael, Marc, and Mitch Hawthorne, Amy (Mike) Saskowski, and Brett
(Jamie) Hawthorne; six great-grandchildren, Alex and Ben Haake, Emma,
Abby, and Justin Saskowski, and Will Hawthorne. She was preceded in death
by her parents; a son, Mike Hawthorne; one sister, Bess Dameron; two
brothers, Offa Dean and Harold Gene Thornton; and step-mother, Velma
Thornton.
