Retired S.I.U. Police Chief Robert S. Harris, 69 of Murphysboro
died at 1:10 pm, Tuesday, November 29, 2005 at Rehab and Care Center of
Jackson County. Robert was born in Peru, IL. on June 27, 1936 the son of
the late Hiram M. and Helen (Welgatt) Harris. He married Jane (Siefert) on
October 9, 1954 in Murphysboro IL. Robert served as Director of Security
for Southern Illinois University Police Department in Carbondale from 1984
to 1992. He also served on the Murphysboro Police Department and the
Jackson County Sheriffs Department. Robert was a member of the First
Christian Church in Murphysboro, the Retired Illinois Chiefs Association,
the Illinois Police Association, and the Illinois Sheriffs Association.
Services will be held on Saturday December 3, 2005 at 11 am at the First
Christian Church in Murphysboro with the Rev. Dee Armes officiating.
Burial will follow at Tower Grove Cemetery in Murphysboro. Visitation will
be from 5 to 8 pm on Friday December 2, 2005 at Crawshaw Funeral Home in
Murphysboro and 10 am Saturday until the hour of the service at the First
Christian Church. Survivors include his wife Jane of Murphysboro, one son
and daughter in law Kirk and Peggy Harris of Benton IL. one daughter Renee
Rain of Houston TX. Six grandchildren Trent Harris of Benton IL
Christopher Rain and Macy Rain both of Houston TX. Greg Swinney, Heather
Swinney and Sara and husband Justin Holman. Three great grandchildren Emma
Swinney, Kaylee Frank and Dash Holman. One brother in law and sister in
law Don and Nancy Siefert and his mother in law Lucy Siefert all of
Murphysboro as well as several niece's nephews and cousins. In addition to
his parents he was preceded in death by sister Joann Venturi and brother
John Harris. Memorials may be made to the Shepard's fund at First
Christian Church and will be accepted at the funeral home or the church.
