George R. Forest, 75 of Murphysboro,
died at 12:46 pm Friday, February 3, 2006 at Memorial Hospital of
Carbondale. Graveside services will be held at 1 pm on Monday, February 6,
2006 at Tower Grove Cemetery in Murphysboro. Visitation will be after 11
am on Monday at Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro. The family requests
that instead of flowers memorials be made to the Jackson County Humane
Society; memorials will be accepted at the funeral home. George was born
October 7, 1930 in Grand Rapids, MI., the son of the late William Walters
and Edith (Damstra) Forest. We was married to Marie Hayden first and then
to Juanita Merrifield, they both preceded him in death. He was a very
active member of the First Church of Christ Scientist in Murphysboro, a
U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War; he was a member of the Murphysboro
Senior Citizens and especially enjoyed the art classes and Bridge group.
He was also a member of Jackson County Home Extension. He was a retired
publications editor at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. George
had written two books, The Little Purple Cow of Murphysboro and Beyond
Beyond. He is survived by one daughter and son in law; Tania and John
Penrod of Carbondale, one sister Alice Gray of Wyoming, MI., one brother
in law; Charles Ring of Eagle Bend, MN. Two grand children; Mitchell and
Lydia Penrod. In addition to his parents and both wives he was preceded in
death by one sister; Edna Ring. George was a life-long member of the
Christian Science faith. He was an exceptionally active and creative man
with a passion for working outdoors. He had a great love for all animals.
He will be missed my many.
