Forrest Potter, 94 of Murphysboro, died at 10:10am on
Friday, October 21, 2011 in Murphysboro. Forrest was born in
Murphysboro on December 20, 1916, a son to the late William and Naomi
Gertrude (Darnell) Potter. He was united in marriage to Naomi Reeder on
June 4, 1939 at the old First Presbyterian Church in downtown
Murphysboro. Forrest and Naomi celebrated their 72nd anniversary this
past June.
Forrest was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army for a total of 9 years
and 6 months during WWII in the South Pacific, in the Army Reserves and
in the Korean conflict.
He owned and operated, with his wife, Potter T.V. Sales and Service in
Murphysboro from 1952 to 1983. He was a member and Deacon of the First
Presbyterian Church of Murphysboro. He also was a member of the
American Legion Paul Stout Post #127, V.F.W. Post #7190, and was a
lifetime member of the A.F. & A.M. Masonic Lodge #498, all of
Murphysboro.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Naomi (Reeder) Potter. Other
survivors include one daughter and son-in-law; Kay and Larry Weatherford
of Carbondale, two sons and daughters-in-law; William F. II and Donna
Potter of St. Louis, MO., and Michael and Lynne Potter of Austin, TX,
one granddaughter; Dr. Kirsten Potter Wilkerson & husband Peter of
Edwardsville, IL., four grandsons; York Weatherford and wife Yasuyo of
Kyoto, Japan, Chad Weatherford of Canyon Country, CA, and Sean & Drew
Potter of Austin, TX. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren,
one sister; Claudean Grammer of Carbondale, one brother-in-law; Hugh
Reeder of Ava, and a host of nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, one sister; Marion Schwebel, and
two brothers; Dale and Darnell Potter.
The family wishes to thank Hospice and his caregivers, Susan Poucher,
Tara Qualls and Tanya Paul.
Funeral services will be at 11 am on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at the
First Presbyterian Church in Murphysboro. Rev. Charles Walden of the
First Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will follow at
Pleasant Grove Memorial Park, in recognition of Forrest’s military
service there will be the folding and presentation of the flag by
members of the American Legion Paul Stout Post 127, and V.F.W. Post 7190
both of Murphysboro, V.F.W Post 2605 in Carbondale and the Jackson
County Disabled American Veterans Chapter 69. Visitation will be from 10
am until the hour of services on Tuesday at the First Presbyterian
Church. Memorials are encouraged and may be made to the First
Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are in the care of Crawshaw Funeral
Home in Murphysboro.
