Elmer K. "E.K." Etherton, 87 of Murphysboro, died at 12:01 pm Monday February 18, 2008 in Murphysboro. E.K. was born in Murphysboro October 7, 1920 a son to the late Elmer Elonzo and Myrna (Kennedy) Etherton. He married Ella Mae Williams September 9, 1945 in Bellflower, CA.; Ella Mae preceded him in death November 22, 1996. E.K. was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Carbondale; he was a retired U.S. Marine Corps Master Sergeant serving a total of 22 years. E.K. enlisted in the Marine Corps just after the attack on Pearl Harbor and served in the South Pacific during WWII and in the Korean War. After retirement from the Marine Corps he was a U.S. Mail carrier and had worked at the Federal Penitentiary in Marion, IL. He was also a member of the Paul Stout Post 127 American Legion in Murphysboro. Funeral services will be at 10 am Thursday, February 21, 2008 at Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro, Bishop Luke Tolley will officiate; burial will follow at Tower Grove Cemetery in Murphysboro with military rites by the American Legion Post 127 and V.F.W. Post 7190 both of Murphysboro, Carbondale V.F.W. Post 2605 and the Jackson County Disabled American Veterans Chapter 69. Memorials are encouraged may be made to the L.D.S. Chapel in Carbondale or to TIP Hospice. Survivors include, one son and daughter in law; Michael "Bo" and Karen Sue Etherton of Murphysboro, two daughters and one son in law; Nancy and Bruce Kessler of St. Louis, MO., and Mary Jane Rains of Murphysboro, nine grandchildren; Michael Etherton, Morgan Peeler, Cindy Jolley, Chalonne Powers, Michaelina Sakowicz, Steve Rains, Ethan Rains, Trisha Kessler and Jill Sams, and five great grandchildren.
